Configure Your Computer to Generate an Error Report
To configure your computer to generate an error report file—in this case a kernel memory dump file—use the method outlined on this page. After you have configured your computer, if you experience another Stop error, a kernel memory dump file will be created automatically. You can then upload this file to Microsoft. You will not be able to upload a file until another Stop error occurs.
Configure your computer to generate a kernel memory dump file:
Category View:
Click Start, click Control Panel, and click Performance and Maintenance.
Under Performance and Maintenance, click System.
On the Advanced tab, in the Startup and Recovery group box, click Settings.
Under Write Debugging Information, select Kernel memory dump. Make sure Overwrite any existing file is checked, and then click OK.
In the System Properties dialog box, click OK.
Or
Classic View:
Click Start and click Control Panel.
In the Control Panel, double-click System. On the Advanced tab, in the Startup and Recovery group box, click Settings.
Under Write Debugging Information, select Kernel memory dump. Make sure Overwrite any existing file is checked, and then click OK.
In the System Properties dialog box, click OK.
The next time your computer experiences a Stop error, you will receive the page requesting an upload of the kernel memory dump file. Please follow the directions and upload the file.
After you’ve uploaded this file, you can change your error reporting information to a small memory dump or turn it off all together. The reason for changing this to a small memory dump is this type of error reporting takes less time to generate than a kernel memory dump, as well as less hard drive space on your computer. Turning off this error reporting altogether will stop your computer from generating error reports. You may want to do this if you do not want to submit any more error reports in the future.
